Moments that Matter: The Role of Play in Dementia Care

CE Hours 1

About this live event

This engaging continuing education session explores how purposeful play-based strategies support neurological function, emotional regulation, and meaningful connection for individuals living with dementia. Participants will learn how shifting from task-driven care to engagement-centered care can reduce distress, improve participation, and enhance quality of life across the disease trajectory. Through real-world care scenarios and evidence-informed approaches, this session reframes everyday interactions - from personal care to communication challenges - into opportunities for connection, dignity, and therapeutic impact. Attendees will leave with practical techniques they can immediately integrate into clinical practice to foster safer, more responsive, and more human-centered dementia care.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe neurological and psychosocial benefits of play-based engagement for individuals living with dementia.
  • Identify common care scenarios in which play-based strategies can replace task-focused approaches.
  • Analyze the impact of play-based engagement on clinical outcomes in dementia patients.

Agenda

The overall purpose of this educational session is to improve quality of life for individuals living with dementia by increasing healthcare professionals’ understanding of the neurological and psychosocial benefits of play-based engagement, identifying opportunities to replace task-focused care with engagement-based strategies, and exploring the impact of play on clinical outcomes. This session will equip participants with practical tools to enhance participation in care, reduce distress, and foster meaningful moments of connection in dementia care.
